COURAGE
Director Carl Williams
Carl is a lifelong resident of the Sarasota/Manatee County area and has served his community in various roles, including coaching, teaching, and mentoring. He competed in athletics both at the high school and collegiate level and credits his path in life to the coaches who he had over the years. Carl has coached at the youth and high school level and currently is approaching his 300th career win as a high school basketball coach. Carl currently coaches Booker High Basketball where he has been known for his skill development and how his team plays hard, together, and in the right way. Carl has coached several college athletes and enjoys mentoring not only players, but aspiring coaches too. Professionally, Carl works as a middle school administrator and has served in that role for 15 years. Carl has a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary social sciences and both master’s and doctorate degrees in Educational Leadership.
Carl has the letter “C” for Courage. Carl states that he chose courage because, “I came from a home where my mother tried her best to provide a stable home for my siblings and, even when my father died when I was six years old from cancer, my mother led by courage. Seeing how my mother had to deal with her grief of losing my father and trying to navigate a world for us when it seemed like her world changed literally overnight, was nothing short of inspiring to me. My mother could have just given up and chosen several negative roads; instead, my mother kept the promise to my dad she made to him on his death bed. My dad asked her to keep us on the right path, and she did that. There were times when I know that the only two things that kept my mother going were faith in God and her courage to uphold that promise. So, courage is my word because when I think about courage I think about my God and my mother…I cannot and will not let them down. Why? Because they blessed me with courage.”
“Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It’s courage that counts.” - John Wooden

PERSEVERANCE
Director Erica Glisson
Erica was born and raised in the Sarasota/Manatee area and has remained here to this day. She has a deep love for this city and is excited to bring the first-ever NBA/WNBA Jr League to the area. Erica’s experience with basketball began in elementary school, where she started learning the game at the local YMCA. In high school, Erica was a four-year varsity player and team captain where she led her team to break 19 school records her senior year. Professionally, Erica has coached middle school basketball and is currently in her ninth year teaching, where she has experience in both language arts and physical education. Erica is also a proud alumnus of the University of South Florida where she holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English and Educational Leadership.
Erica has the letter “P” for Perseverance. She chose this letter because, ‘Perseverance is the steady pursuit of one’s goals, but, more importantly, it is the ability to remain resilient in the face of adversity. Hardship is an unavoidable part of life, but choosing to persevere despite obstacles creates a mindset rooted in self-growth and discipline. As an athlete, perseverance has guided me through the ups and downs that come with dedicating oneself to a sport. I have battled several serious injuries that kept me sidelined from participating in sports; however, my ability to persevere helped me navigate the physical and emotional toll that comes with injury. While my injuries have limited me physically, they have only strengthened my mentality and perception of self. I understand my limits, but I have a much deeper understanding of how far I am capable of going. This is true for all aspects of life, not just sports. Ultimately, perseverance is a key driver of success and fulfillment, allowing individuals to realize their potential and achieve long-term goals.’”

STRENGTH
Director Kevin Corwin
Kevin is a Florida transplant who has lived in the Sarasota-Manatee area for 15+ years. He was born and raised in Oregon where he competed in both high school and collegiate sports. Kevin grew up in a sports’ household. His father was a coach for over 35 years and both of his brothers competed in sports at the college level. From an early age, he fell in love with the competition and strategy involved with athletics. Kevin has coached high school athletics for over twenty years in both Oregon and Florida. He is currently coaching basketball at Sarasota Christian School. Professionally, Kevin enters his second year in finance at a local middle school after teaching middle school mathematics for 23 years. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Communications with a Math Minor and a Master’s Degree in Education.
Kevin picked the letter S for “Strength.” Here is his explanation why, “When most people think of strength, their first thought goes to physical strength. However, there are so many more ways to be strong. In sports and life, we need to be physically strong, emotionally strong, mentally strong, strong in our convictions, faithfully strong. All of these strengths work together for us to be successful in whatever we choose to do in our lives. In my experience as an athlete, coach, educator, father; my ‘other’ strengths have been equally, if not more, important than my physical strength. As a single parent of a biracial adoptive family, we have needed levels of strength that I did not know I had in me. Thankfully, I get my needed strength from our Lord. My goal through CA.P^S is to help our area grow in the strength of love, faith, community and athletics!”
